JOSEPH WITTERWULGHE (Belgium, 1883-1967).
"Aviator Guy Dumont". Belgium, first third of the 20th century.
Plate in patinated bronze.
Signed.
Measurements: 35 x 65 cm.
Plate in patinated bronze made by Joseph Witterwulghe, Belgian sculptor specialized in reliefs and sculptural works of commemorative character. The piece represents the aviator Guy Dumont in the cockpit of an airplane, equipped with flying clothes and goggles, in an image of strong historical evocation.
The relief stands out for its sober and effective composition, where the figure of the pilot is integrated into the geometric structure of the plane. The contrast between the more expressive modeling of the face and the linear hardness of the machine reinforces the modern spirit of the work, linked to the imaginary of aviation in the first decades of the twentieth century.
The piece is part of the interwar taste for the exaltation of the new technical heroes: pilots, engineers and explorers, figures associated with progress, speed and the conquest of the air. Witterwulghe's signature and the quality of the bronze reinforce the interest of this plaque as a sculptural work and visual document of early European aeronautical culture.
