DESCRIPTION

Spanish School; 18th century.
“The Infant Jesus as Salvator Mundi.”
Carved and polychrome wood.
Has some damage.
Measurements: 57 x 28 x 16 cm.
Crafted from carved and polychrome wood, this work exemplifies the enduring presence of devotional imagery in the Hispanic world during the Modern Age. The iconography of the Salvator Mundi has medieval origins and became widely popular during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, although it was typically depicted as the adult figure of Christ. In this childlike version, the image takes on a particularly approachable and affectionate character, in keeping with the spiritual trends that promoted a more intimate relationship between the faithful and the divine. The Child appears naked, with a tunic draped over his shoulder and a globe in his left hand, while he blesses with his right.
From a stylistic perspective, the work belongs to the tradition of late Spanish Baroque sculpture, characterized by a pursuit of naturalism, delicate finishes, and a strong symbolic intent. The carving displays careful anatomical rendering adapted to the child’s figure, with soft, well-proportioned forms that convey innocence and serenity. The polychromy plays a fundamental role, lending realism to the skin tones and enriching the physical presence of the image. As was customary in Spanish religious sculpture, the technical quality of the carving serves the purpose of devotion, fostering a visual experience capable of evoking empathy and spiritual contemplation.
