Andrés de Guevara y Basoazábal was a Jesuit philosopher from New Spain in the 18th century, recognized for his attempt to harmonize enlightened thought and religious tradition. After being educated in Jesuit institutions in New Spain, he was expelled along with his order in 1767 and continued his intellectual life in Italy.
His most important work, Institutionum Elementarium Philosophiae, written in Latin, offers a systematic introduction to philosophy, combining history of thought, logic, physics and cosmology. In it he defends intellectual freedom, the value of wisdom and openness to modern scientific knowledge, such as the Copernican system.
He was considered an eclectic and moderate thinker, committed to classical humanism and to a philosophy oriented to the common good.
