Francisco Verdejo Páez was an outstanding Spanish mathematician, geographer and astronomer of the 19th century. Son of the mathematician Francisco Verdejo González, he shared with his father not only his vocation for the exact sciences, but also his teaching career. Identified with Frenchified positions, he taught arithmetic, algebra and geometry at the Real Colegio de Lavapiés in Madrid between 1809 and 1812, and was later professor of mathematics at the Real Estudios de San Isidro (1821-1822). He also taught Geography at the Instituto del Noviciado in Madrid and was appointed professor at the Seminario de Nobles in 1835, a position he resigned. From October 15, 1845 he occupied the chair of Geography at the Central University. He was the author of a Tratado de Agrimensura (1814) and Principios de geografía astronómica, física y política (1818), a work that reached a remarkable diffusion and was republished on numerous occasions throughout the 19th century. To his scientific production is added a literary incursion of strong anticlerical tone, La Inquisición por dentro o el 8 de marzo de 1820, a dramatic piece in four acts.
