Joseph Fiévée was a prominent French intellectual who served as a journalist, novelist, essayist, playwright, high official and secret agent. He began his career during the French Revolution and, despite being imprisoned on several occasions, managed to occupy relevant positions under the Napoleonic regime, as editor of the Journal de l'Empire, maître des requêtes of the Council of State and prefect of the department of Nièvre.
He supported Louis XVIII during the Restoration and, although initially linked to the ultra party, he adopted more liberal positions from 1818, especially in defense of freedom of the press. He was sentenced to prison for his writings, but continued to collaborate with important political publications of his time.
