Voltaire was a prominent French philosopher and writer, considered one of the most influential and widely read figures of Enlightenment thought. His work includes genres such as lyric poetry, theater, narrative and philosophical essays, aimed at both the educated French public and the European elite, who usually read in French. Many of his works reached wide circulation, were quickly translated and circulated throughout the continent.
His criticism of absolutism, the feudal system and the exclusive power of the Catholic Church established him as a precursor of the Enlightenment and a key figure in the gestation of the French Revolution, and the clarity of his style, his sharp wit and his mastery of irony gave him a unique place in the history of Western literature and thought, to the point that the 18th century in France has been called "the century of Voltaire".
