The "Historialis venerabilis domini Antonini" is an influential historical work, commonly known as the Summa Historialis or Chronica, written by Saint Anthony of Florence (Antoninus Pierozzi) in the 15th century. This work covers universal history from creation to his time, generally divided into three parts (prima-tertia pars) covering early church history and the Middle Ages.
Antoninus of Florence grew up in a family linked to the legal world, as his father was a notary. From a young age he felt the religious call and in 1406 he entered the Order of Preachers, training under the guidance of Giovanni Dominici, a staunch opponent of the nascent Florentine humanism. His life was marked by a deep spiritual vocation and a strong moral commitment, which he expressed both in his preaching and in his writings, among which the Summa sacrae theologiae and the Chronica stand out. In 1446, Pope Eugene IV appointed him archbishop of his native city, where he carried out his pastoral work with great dedication until his death on May 4, 1459, and was canonized in 1523 by Pope Adrian VI. Since then, the Catholic Church has venerated him as a saint and celebrates his feast day on May 10. His figure remains especially linked to Florence, where his spiritual legacy lives on.
