Set of six armchairs, all with the same design inspired by the work of the English cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale (1718-1779), main representative of the British rococo.
All the armchairs have a cabriole leg carved at the knee and foot with scrolls and acanthus leaves, characterised by a pronounced curvature that is not continued at the waist or the seat, but emerges directly from the straight base of the body of the piece of furniture. This combination of straight lines and sinuous curves can also be seen in the interplay between the cross of the armrest, in the form of an "S" shape, and the armrest itself, which is completely straight. The profiles of the waist, the backrest and the arm cross are decorated with carved mouldings.
Thomas Chippendale created a new style of luxury furniture that became widely known and perfectly represented the personality of the English Rococo. It brought together French Rococo, Gothic and Chinese influences. His designs were also very popular in the mid to late 19th century, giving its name to a new style that was cultivated into the 20th century. This new Chippendale style even gave rise to sub-genres such as the Chinese, Gothic and Irish Chippendale.
