Coffee table, made of onyx and marble and dated late 20th century. The upper tabletop, configured as an inlaid checkerboard in soft tones that contrast with the whiteness of the surrounding marble, reveals a careful work of cutting and polishing that enhances the translucence and delicate veins of onyx. The structure rises on a prismatic shaft of refined lines, also in onyx, whose chromatic variety, with reddish and ochre inclusions, introduces a visual dynamism that dialogues with the geometric sobriety of the whole. The base, also in stone, functions as a visual and material counterweight, giving stability to the piece and underlining its sculptural nature.
During the last third of the 20th century, this type of game furniture, especially chess or checkers tables integrated into living room furniture, acquired a notable relevance in domestic interiors. The use of onyx and marble also responded to the taste for noble materials that characterized certain areas of decorative design at the time, which sought to combine luxury, durability and timeless aesthetics.
