DESCRIPTION
Louis XVI cylinder bureau; France, c. 1780.
Coniferous structure, Bois de rose rosewood veneer and bronze.
Measurements: 126 x 120 x 72 cm.
Louis XVI cylinder bureau with coniferous wood structure; bois de rose (rosewood) veneer; chiseled gilt bronze applications; interior top covered in dyed leather. Assembled by traditional carpentry with a mechanical sliding cylinder system.
This is a typology characteristic of French furniture of the late 18th century. The piece of furniture is composed of a rectangular body raised on four stipe-like legs, which support a box with a curved front articulated by a sliding cylinder. When opened, the cylinder reveals an interior organized in compartments and small drawers, arranged for writing and storing documents. The whole is enriched with abundant applications of finely chiseled gilt bronze, handles, keyholes, leg trimmings and side handles.
This bureau is fully in keeping with the Louis XVI style, developed in France in the decades prior to the French Revolution, and deeply influenced by neoclassical ideals. In contrast to the exuberance of the Rococo, this style recovers the formal clarity, symmetry and balance inspired by classical antiquity, visible here in the regularity of the volumes, the verticality of the legs and the decorative restraint.
The bureau à cylindre was a typology particularly appreciated in the aristocratic and administrative circles of the last third of the 18th century. The piece stands out for its excellent integration of functionality, mechanical innovation and aesthetic refinement. The sliding cylinder system, more sophisticated than traditional folding doors, reflects the high technical level reached by French cabinetmaking of the period.
