Henri Jacob (Cheny, 1753 - Paris, 1824) was one of the most prominent menuisiers en sièges active in Paris between the end of the reign of Louis XVI and the beginning of the Napoleonic Empire. Received maître on September 29, 1779, he belonged to the famous Jacob dynasty of artisans and was a cousin of the renowned Georges Jacob, a fundamental figure of French neoclassical furniture. Several studies, including those of Denise Ledoux-Lebard, confirmed this family link, as well as the close stylistic relationship between the two workshops.
Henri Jacob initially established his workshop in rue de Bourbon-Villeneuve in Paris, later moving to rue de l'Échiquier around 1799, where he remained in business until about 1806. He also opened a commercial establishment in the rue Neuve-Saint-Étienne, in the vicinity of the boulevard Bonne-Nouvelle, at a time of great expansion of the Parisian market for luxury furniture. His production specialized in seating and representative furniture made of fine woods, particularly mahogany, and characterized by a precise and elegant carving. Although he worked within the tradition of the Louis XVI style, he excelled especially during the Directory and Consulate periods, adapting the neoclassical repertoire to more sober and architectural forms.
