Mid-18th-century desk and bookcase, crafted from carved walnut and designed as a stately piece of furniture for an office or library. The piece features a vertical structure in several sections: a lower desk with a hinged lid, a drawer front, and gilded hardware, and an upper double bookcase section with glass-paned doors and leaded glass. This combination of functions—writing, storage, and display—is characteristic of representative domestic furniture, intended both for work and for the preservation of books, documents, or curatorial objects.

The piece represents a style that was widespread in the Girona region during the 18th century: large desk-bookcases with stacked sections, designed for the well-to-do homes of merchants, lawyers, notaries, or landowners. In the Baix Empordà region, and especially in towns such as Torroella de Montgrí, La Bisbal d’Empordà, and Pals, this type of furniture became widely popular thanks to the economic prosperity stemming from Mediterranean trade and agriculture.

The ornamental style reflects the late 18th-century Baroque, evident in the curved top molding, the mixtilinear finial, the molded panels, the carved scrollwork, and the robustly carved legs. Also noteworthy are the gilded metal handles and keyholes, decorated with hybrid figures that add an ornamental touch in the Baroque style and enhance the visual richness of the front. In contrast to the architectural austerity of the main body, these details introduce a dynamic and decorative quality, underscoring the piece’s representative character, typical of interiors of a certain standing.
