Recognized as one of the most prestigious Parisian cabinetmakers of his time, Dasson achieved great renown for the extraordinary quality of his reproductions and interpretations of period furniture, inspired especially by the designs of the masters of the reign of Louis XVI. The piece features a solid oak frame covered with mahogany veneer, whose grain lends uniformity and chromatic expressiveness to the whole. The decoration is enriched by a profuse application of exquisitely crafted gilded bronze, visible on the moldings, pilasters, openwork galleries, mascarons, garlands, and other neoclassically inspired ornamental elements, all executed with the high technical skill that characterizes Dasson’s work. The top of the piece is made of Bracatelle marble, an ornamental stone highly prized at the time for its polychromatic hues and irregular veining. The design draws on the formal repertoire of the Louis XVI style, defined by compositional symmetry, refined architectural lines, and the use of classical motifs. Rather than a literal copy of an 18th-century model, the sideboard represents a reinterpretation of the aesthetic ideals of French Neoclassicism.
Henry Dasson was one of the most prestigious cabinetmakers and bronze casters in France during the second half of the 19th century. Specializing in historicist-style furniture and decorative objects, he was noted for his refined reinterpretations and reproductions of models from the reigns of Louis XIV, Louis XV, and, especially, Louis XVI. His work was widely recognized at the World’s Fairs, particularly at the 1878 Paris Exposition, which earned him the Grand Prix Artistique and the title of Knight of the Legion of Honor. As cabinetmaker to Empress Eugénie and supplier to the French aristocracy and the British royal family, his creations are preserved today in major public and private collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
