This bronze censer, probably made in Morocco or Algeria during the 19th century, is a representative example of the ritual and domestic objects used in North Africa for burning incense and aromatic substances. Its openwork spherical structure, crowned by a turned top and supported on a tripod base, responds to a typology widely spread in the Islamic Mediterranean area, where perfume and aromatic smoke occupied a central place in religious practices as well as in social and domestic ceremonies.
The piece presents an engraved decoration of geometric and stylized vegetal motifs, executed by incision on the surface of the metal. These designs refer to ornamental repertoires typical of Maghrebi Islamic art, characterized by rhythmic repetition and formal abstraction. The Punctures distributed on the cover allowed the perfumed smoke to escape, generating luminous and visual effects that reinforced the ceremonial character of the object.
