DESCRIPTION
Pair of vases. France, Napoleon III, third quarter of the 19th century.
Campan Mélange" marble, chiseled and gilded bronze.
Measurements: 58 x 28 x 28 cm.
Imposing pair of "Campan Mélange" marble vases with Louis XV style chiseled and gilded bronze mounts.
Since Antiquity, the quarries of the Campan site, in the Hautes-Pyrénées, have produced several varieties of marble, among the most famous in the history of hard stones. All of them are characterized by the presence of green veins, very dark and marked. They were widely used in the great apartments of Versailles under the reign of Louis XIV, for fireplaces, but also for many wall panel decorations, due to the very great pictorial qualities of their motifs.
