DESCRIPTION
Set of five compasses of the XVII-XVIII centuries.
Wrought iron and brass.
Exhibits wear consistent with age and use.
Measurements: 1.5 x 20 x 2 cm (the largest).
This is a set of dividers or compasses with dry points, fundamental tools in geometry, cartography, nautical, architecture and various manual trades (such as carpentry or blacksmithing) of the XVII and XVIII centuries. Four of them are forged in iron. The smallest compass is made of brass. They are handmade tools of great resistance, with friction joint and sharp points. The patina of time, the imperfections of the forging and the functional design of these compasses connect us directly with the craftsmen and professionals who handled them, revealing the importance of these basic tools in the development of science, technology and art in the pre-industrial era.
