DESCRIPTION
Convoy; France, Empire period, c. 1810
Ebonized wood; brass; gilt and patinated bronze; blown glass.
Wear and tear; slight chipping on one of the glass pieces.
Measurements: 34 x 27 x 27 cm.
Convoy of the first French Empire that stands out for its combination of materials and its neoclassical aesthetics with influences from ancient Egypt.
It sits on an ebonized wood base framed by a brass bead molding. The compositional axis of the work is a classically inspired female sculpture that presents a chromatic play combining gilded bronze on the torso, headdress and arms, with patinated bronze for the folds of the tunic. Above this figure rises a finial formed by two gilded bronze serpents, on whose heads rest two cut crystal finials secured with chains. The set is completed with two decanters, two cups and two bowls of clear blown glass, decorated with spiral striated pattern.
