DESCRIPTION
PIERRE ALECHINSKY (Belgium, 1927).
"Galerie Maeght, 1961.
Silkscreen.
In very good state of preservation.
Measurements: 120 x 160 cm.
Work made on the occasion of the exhibition held at the Galerie Maeght, Paris, one of the fundamental spaces for the dissemination of modern and contemporary European art in the second half of the twentieth century.
The composition presents a gestural and dynamic language, characteristic of Pierre Alechinsky's work, in which the black line, energetic and sinuous, structures the space and dialogues with large areas of flat color. The spontaneous and calligraphic stroke refers directly to the influence of abstract expressionism and, especially, of the COBRA group, of which Alechinsky was one of the most prominent figures.
The work reflects the artist's interest in writing, automatic drawing and oriental painting, integrating gesture and color in a free and rhythmic composition. The result is an image of great visual strength, where the border between drawing and painting is diluted.
Alechinsky's posters and serigraphs made for institutional exhibitions and historical galleries such as the Galerie Maeght occupy a prominent place in his graphic production.
Pierre Alechinsky is one of the most relevant contemporary Belgian artists. Founding member of the COBRA group (1948-1951), he developed a work deeply influenced by automatism, oriental calligraphy and gestural painting. Throughout his career he has worked indistinctly in painting, drawing and graphic work, exhibiting in leading international institutions.
