DESCRIPTION
JAUME PLENSA (Barcelona, 1955)
Untitled.1983.
Etching on paper, copy 9/22.
Signed and numbered in pencil.
Measurements: 20.5 x 14.5 cm (print); 35 x 50 cm (paper).
This print belongs to Jaume Plensa's early period, when the artist investigates the human figure from a formal synthesis close to primitivism and symbolic graphics.
The totemic figure appears reduced to essential forms, with organs and internal elements suggested by schematic lines and signs that evoke a symbolic rather than descriptive anatomy. The surface of the etching, with its glazes and scratches, provides a material dimension that intensifies the presence of the figure.
Jaume Plensa has had an extensive international career, with outstanding exhibitions such as the retrospective held at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in 2000.
He has received important recognitions, among them the National Prize of Plastic Arts of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Medal of Knight of Arts and Letters of the French Ministry of Culture. His work is part of important international collections and museums such as the MoMA in New York, the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid and the MACBA in Barcelona.
