DESCRIPTION
JEAN FRANÇOIS CASAS (France, active in the 18th century).
"Views of Rome".
Set of four engravings.
Measurements: 28 x 48,5 cm (print); 32,5 x 50 cm (paper); 59,5 x 76 cm (frame).
The engravings of Rome by Jean François Casas are characterized by their documentary and topographical approach, showing views of the city with considerable architectural detail and a clear and orderly style typical of neoclassical taste; they usually depict monuments, ruins and emblematic urban spaces - such as temples, forums or squares - with a balanced composition and careful perspective, intended both for Grand Tour travelers and for cultural dissemination, combining descriptive precision with a certain idealism that enhances the grandeur of ancient and modern Rome.
Jean François Casas was a French engraver active in the 18th century, specialized in intaglio engraving on copper, whose production was mainly focused on the reproduction of artistic works, portraits and religious or historical themes; although he is not a very documented figure nor of great individual fame, he was part of the group of engravers who played an essential role in the dissemination of art in Europe before the appearance of photography, contributing to the circulation and visual conservation of numerous works within the artistic context of the end of the Ancien Régime and the beginning of Neoclassicism.
