In this lithograph, Miró condenses with absolute clarity the language that defines his late production: a combination of gestural, almost calligraphic strokes and fields of pure color that build the image from the essential. The figure, barely suggested by signs, is articulated from a balance between spontaneity and control, where the structural black dialogues with a vibrant palette of reds, greens, blues and yellows.
Made for the exhibition at Galerie Maeght in 1978 -a key gallery in the international diffusion of his work-, the piece belongs to one of the moments of greatest recognition of the artist. The lithographs published by Maeght during this period stand out for their technical quality and their fidelity to the original gesture, and are today among Miró's most sought-after graphic works.
Joan Miró was trained in Barcelona and made his debut in 1918 at the Dalmau Galleries. In 1920 he moved to Paris, where he came into contact with the avant-garde and developed his own language influenced by surrealism. His international recognition was soon consolidated: in 1928 the MoMA acquired his works and in 1941 dedicated a great retrospective to him.
Throughout his career he received important distinctions and his work was widely disseminated in Europe and the United States. He is currently represented in institutions such as the Joan Miró Foundation (Barcelona), the MoMA (New York), the Reina Sofía Museum (Madrid), the National Gallery of Art (Washington) and the Centre Pompidou (Paris), among others.
