This delicate scene is fully inscribed in the French tradition of the 18th century, heir of the rococo taste for the elegant and refined representations of the courtly life. The composition brings together three figures in an idealized natural environment, where the interaction between the characters suggests an episode of courtship.
The protagonism falls on the female figures, richly attired in dresses with wide pleats, treated with special attention to the textile qualities and chromatic vibration. The male figure, in a slightly inclined attitude, introduces a narrative element that reinforces the courtly character of the scene. The inclusion of the book adds an intellectual nuance, usual in this type of compositions.
The brushstroke, light and fluid, together with the warm palette, refers to models widespread in the environment of artists such as Watteau, Boucher or Fragonard.
