ALEXANDER NASMYTH (Scotland, 1758-1840).
"Landscape with figures".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Signed at lower right.
With with a patch on the back.
Measurements: 70 x 91 cm; 96 x 116 cm (frame).
This romantic landscape by Alexander Nasmyth conveys a calm and melancholic atmosphere, very characteristic of Scottish romanticism. The scene is dominated by nature: large dark trees frame the composition on both sides and create a sense of depth and mystery.
Alexander Nasmyth was a painter considered the father of landscape painting in Scotland, known for his romantic landscapes and views of Edinburgh, although he also excelled as a portraitist. Initially trained in Edinburgh and later influenced by the Italian classical tradition after a trip to Rome, he developed a luminous and detailed style that combined nature and architecture, being especially famous for the portrait of the poet Robert Burns made in 1787, in addition to working as a designer, amateur architect and influential teacher of several Scottish artists.
