DESCRIPTION

"Saint Ferdinand.

It has a frame of the nineteenth century.
Measurements: 69 x 56 cm; 77 x 63 cm (frame).
In this devotional painting the effigy of San Fernando is imposed before the spectator with the elevated look towards the sky and the contained gesture of the hand resting on the chest, while with the other hand he holds the palm of martyrdom, symbol of sanctity and spiritual victory. The painting fully responds to the Andalusian baroque tradition, characterized by emotional intensity and the exaltation of models of holiness linked to the monarchy and the defense of the Christian faith. The compositional sobriety and the directed illumination enhance the mystical expression of the character, moving away from the courtly portrait to approach an idealized and pious representation of the monarch.
The figure of Saint Ferdinand was deeply linked to the city of Seville since the Christian conquest of 1248. According to tradition, during the siege of the city the Virgin of Antigua appeared to the king and promised him victory, miraculously guiding him to the ancient image preserved in a mosque later transformed into a Christian temple, today integrated into the Cathedral of Seville. This episode turned the Virgen de la Antigua into one of the spiritual symbols of the conquest and reinforced the sacred dimension of Ferdinand III, venerated since then as a model of a Christian king.
The work thus reflects not only the devotion to the patron saint, but also the importance of Sevillian religious tradition and the legends linked to the Reconquest. The result is a solemn and intimate image, where spirituality and royal dignity come together in a representation characteristic of 18th century Andalusian religious painting.
