Work inspired by the episode of Genesis in which Joseph is betrayed and sold by his own brothers to some merchants. The painting clearly reveals the legacy of the late Italian Baroque, especially in the scenographic treatment of space and in the dynamic construction of the figures. The main group is organized around the old merchant and Joseph's brothers, whose attitudes and gestures articulate a complex choreography of looks and movements. The narrative tension is concentrated in the exchange of coins and in the emphatic gestures of the characters, characteristic resources of a painting conceived to emotionally involve the viewer. In contrast to the classical serenity of the previous century, here a restrained theatricality dominates, closer to eighteenth-century taste.
The architectural setting also plays a fundamental role. The monumental ruins and classical structures that frame the scene refer to the Italian tradition of capriccio architectonico, where real and imaginary elements combine to create idealized settings of ancient resonance. These architectures do not function solely as a decorative background: they underline the moralizing character of the episode and situate the biblical story in a timeless and monumental space, heir to Roman and Venetian visual culture.
The work shows a warm palette dominated by earths, reds and ochers, illuminated by hallmarks of light that draw attention to the central narrative core. The brushstroke is fluid and vibrant, especially visible in the clothing and in the areas of architectural half-light, a common trait of many Italian schools of the 18th century that still preserved the Venetian chromatic heritage. The oval format also contributes to reinforce the theatrical and intimate feeling of the composition.
