DESCRIPTION

Italian School; late 18th century–early 19th century.
“Still Life.”
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 80.5 x 116 cm; 103.5 x 137 cm (frame).
On a table lies a hare suspended upside down, accompanied by small birds, a bunch of green leaves, a ceramic vessel, and a wicker basket. The subject matter draws on a long tradition of still lifes associated with abundance and hunting, which were highly prized by both the European aristocracy and the bourgeoisie. Beyond the depiction of food and game, the work evokes humanity’s relationship with nature and its use of the environment’s resources, while also reminding us of the transience of life—an idea frequently associated with this type of composition.
From a stylistic perspective, the painting stands out for its marked naturalism and the use of directed lighting that emerges from the darkness of the background. The light falls on the hare and the other elements, highlighting with great precision the textures of the fur, the birds’ feathers, the leaves, and the fibers of the basket. The contrast between the illuminated areas and the deep shadows creates a dramatic atmosphere that lends visual power to the scene and focuses the viewer’s attention on the objects depicted. The brushwork is loose and confident, especially in the depiction of organic surfaces, where the artist demonstrates a remarkable ability to capture the material qualities of each element.
The work belongs to the tradition of the late Italian school, at a time of transition between the final echoes of the Baroque and the new sensibilities of the turn of the century. Although it retains the Baroque penchant for lighting effects and realistic detail, the composition reveals a more balanced arrangement and a direct observation of nature characteristic of the naturalist tendencies that defined the period. The result is an image of great visual intensity that transforms an everyday scene into an exercise in technical virtuosity and a reflection on material life, confirming the relevance and prestige of the still-life genre in Italian painting of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
