Known for his refined scenes of gallant theme, Mariano Alonso Pérez y Villagrosa developed an elegant and modern painting, capable of capturing moments full of life and sensitivity. He trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Luis in Zaragoza, and at the end of the 19th century he furthered his education in Rome and Paris, two fundamental centers for his artistic evolution.
He is documented in Rome in 1881, where he painted El paso del Viático por entre una mascarada, a work signed and dated by the author. A year earlier he had executed an ambitious large-format composition, La defensa del arrabal de Zaragoza por el Tío Jorge contra las tropas francesas, which reveals his narrative capacity and his interest in historical themes.
Specializing in gallant and costumbrist scenes, Alonso Pérez worked with a precious and loose style, fully modern for his time. His canvases transmit spontaneity and immediacy, and stand out for their ability to capture the atmosphere and light of the chosen moment with an almost chronistic look. His work is preserved today in the Diputación Provincial de Zaragoza and in various private collections.
