This winter landscape is inscribed in the French tradition of the naturalistic landscape developed between the end of the XIX century and the first decades of the XX century, heir of the realism of the School of Barbizon as well as of the luminous investigations of the impressionism. The scene represents a snow-covered suburban view, articulated in successive planes that lead the eye towards the urban profile in the background, where the towers of a church are silhouetted against a leaden gray sky.
The composition is structured through a balance between the immediacy of the foreground, with the snowy terrain and the modest construction and the atmospheric depth achieved through a loose and nuanced brushstroke. The snow does not appear as a uniform surface, but worked with subtle chromatic variations that incorporate ochers, grays and bluish reflections, a characteristic resource of outdoor painting. The capture of the winter light, diffuse and cold, demonstrates an attentive sensitivity to the changing effects of the atmosphere.
