Emile Hansen developed a representative trajectory of the Danish painting of transition between the naturalism and the aesthetic searches of the 20th century. His training began in a practical way: he worked as a decorator while studying painting. He was apprenticed to the painter Alfred Broge and between 1902 and 1904 he furthered his training by briefly attending the Copenhagen Academy and the school of Kristian Zahrtmann, one of the most dynamic centers of Danish art at the time. The influence of Zahrtmann, advocate of a painting of strong chromatism and individual sensitivity, was significant in the evolution of Hansen, and in 1912 he moved to Aarhus, where he continued and consolidated his pictorial career. From there he developed a production consistent with the Danish artistic tradition.
