"Urban landscape".

In this small panel, Louis Valtat displays a painting of marked gestural freedom, constructed by means of a fast and vibrant brushstroke that captures the atmosphere of an urban or market scene. The forms appear barely suggested through spots of color and touches of light, creating a dynamic composition where the pictorial matter acquires great prominence.
The work reflects the artist's characteristic pictorial language, close to post-impressionism and early fauvism, where color and free brushstrokes prevail over descriptive detail. These types of studies or quick scenes are evidence of Valtat's ability to capture the immediate visual impression with great chromatic sensitivity.
Louis Valtat was a leading figure in French painting in the late 19th century and first half of the 20th century. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Académie Julian, he participated in the major Parisian salons and was associated with post-impressionist circles.
His work, characterized by the intense use of color and a loose and luminous brushstroke, was fundamental in the early development of Fauvism, being considered one of its precursors along with artists such as Matisse and Derain. His paintings are kept today in important institutions such as the Musée d'Orsay and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York or the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, among others.
