The scenes of women reading in painting, very frequent since the seventeenth century and especially in the nineteenth century, are usually intimate, silent and contemplative. The female figure generally appears alone or isolated from her surroundings, absorbed in reading, which transmits concentration and recollection. As on this occasion, they are often set in domestic interiors - next to a window, in a quiet corner or in front of a table. The gesture is restrained: head bowed, gaze fixed on the pages, body relaxed.
Reading is thus associated with values such as education, introspection, sensitivity or even a certain feminine autonomy. In many cases, the book is not just an object, but a symbol of knowledge, escape or inner world.
