Valencian painter active during the second half of the XIX century, Jose Vilar was a student of Javier Yuste in the Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos of Valencia. In 1871 he obtained, by opposition, the chair of landscape of the mentioned Academy of San Carlos. Throughout his career he took part in various artistic competitions and official exhibitions, such as the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1887, where he presented his canvas "Monasterio de Sancti Spiritu" which earned him a certificate of third medal. The following year, in 1888, he received an honorary mention at the Universal Exposition of Barcelona, for the work "Ribera del Júcar". In 1890 he participated again in the National Exhibition, with "La tarde" and "Peñas de Europa", and in 1892 and 1895 he received honorary mentions for his works "Río Palancia", "Ría de Pravia" and "Crepúsculo de otoño". Her Majesty the Queen of Spain awarded him the Cross of Carlos III for his small format painting "Recuerdo de Sagunto". He was also the author of two collections of sketchbooks for teaching, works with which he obtained great success. His work is represented in the Museo de Bellas Artes Píos V in Valencia, as well as in various private and institutional collections in the region.
