Untitled.
Oil on canvas.

Erik Stæhr Nielsen was educated at various art institutions, including the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. His travels to Sierra Leone and Senegal profoundly influenced his work, transforming his experiences into fantastical depictions of primitive life and wild nature. He was a pioneer in using primitive art as an inspiration for Danish modernism. His paintings often featured dramatic scenes with dancing, fighting, fleeing and sun worship, exploring the simplified and decorative form of primitive art. Some of his notable works include "Skovfolket" and "Maskedans". Stæhr-Nielsen established himself as part of the World War I modernist movement, although he remained on the fringes of established artistic circles, focusing on expression through color and nature subject matter.
