This work shows the landscape as a space of spiritual introspection. The composition displays a succession of hills and forests that are diluted in the distance until they converge in a lake horizon barely illuminated by a twilight. The atmospheric gradation and the superimposition of planes generate an enveloping depth that refers to the German romantic sensibility of the 19th century, especially to the notion of the sublime linked to the contemplative experience of nature.
However, more than a precise topographical description, the work proposes a symbolic construction of the landscape. The absence of human figures and the silent amplitude of the scenery reinforce its meditative character, in line with fin-de-siècle symbolism, which understood nature as a mirror of the state of mind. The mist that envelops the valleys and the dim light that expands on the horizon suggest a transition between darkness and revelation, a recurring motif in Central European symbolist painting.
In the post-war context, this look at the landscape can also be interpreted as a search for permanence and spiritual reconstruction after the devastation of war.
