DESCRIPTION
JOAQUIN TERRUELLA MATILLA (Barcelona, 1891 - 1957).
"Flowers.
Oil on cardboard.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 19,5 x 16,5 cm; 47,5 x 44 cm (frame).
Floral still life of free and spontaneous execution. The composition is constructed by means of a loose and dynamic brushstroke, with visible impastos and a vibrant treatment of the color that grants great freshness to the set. This reflects Joaquim Terruella's interest in a direct and luminous painting, close to post-impressionist sensibilities.
Joaquim Terruella was a Catalan painter, disciple of Santiago Rusiñol and nephew of the artist Segundo Matilla. He exhibited for the first time in Barcelona in 1916 and, throughout his career, he presented his work in galleries such as Sala Parés and Sala Gaspar, as well as in cities such as Paris, Madrid and Palma de Mallorca. He also worked as a bullfighting illustrator for publications such as El Día Gráfico and La Noche.
His work is kept in institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Madrid and the Provincial Museum of Lugo.
