The work represents a mountainous landscape crossed by a course of water that runs between a dense and exuberant vegetation, while in the background rise abrupt rock formations illuminated by a warm light that accentuates its verticality and dramatism. The work is part of the Central European landscape tradition which, even in an artistic context marked by the consolidation of the avant-garde, kept alive the interest in the direct observation of nature and the continuity of the pictorial languages inherited from the nineteenth century.
Nature appears represented as a vast, relatively untouched environment, in which human presence is absent or implicit. This choice reinforces a reading of landscape as an autonomous setting and as a realm of emotional relationship with the natural world, an idea deeply rooted in German visual culture since Romanticism.
