DESCRIPTION
Embroidery. Turkey, 18th century.
Silk embroidered with silver thread.
It has slight damage typical of its age. Back embroidered in silk.
Measurements: 220 x 166 cm.
Eighteenth century Ottoman embroidery. On a red field develops a great ornamental display that germinates from a central rosette and is organized symmetrically in garlands nested one in another. The synthetic motifs alternate with naturalistic flowers and crescent moons that are integrated as stems in the plant pattern. It consists of three borders, the central one wider, in which the main designs are repeated with variations. The use of silver thread on silk underlines the luxurious condition of the piece and gives it a subtle relief against the crimson background. Originally this type of fabrics were intended for curtains and hangings for stately use.
