The Château Ausone winery is located near the town of Saint-Émilion, in the Bordeaux wine region. Its wine is one of only two to receive the highest ranking, Premier Grand Cru Classé (A), in the 1955 Saint-Émilion Wine Classification, along with Château Cheval Blanc.
Ausone takes its name from Decimus Magnus Ausonius (310-395), a Bordeaux statesman and poet who owned a vineyard that is believed to be part of the foundations of the Château Ausone villa. The winery has elevated south-facing vineyards on sloping terraces in an ideal situation, which enabled it to be one of the few wineries to escape the terrible frost of 1956. The success of the wine produced at Ausone is attributed to a combination of sun exposure and soil, a mixture of sand and clay over sandstone unique to the district. The vineyard has 7.3 hectares of cabernet franc (50%) and merlot (50%) varieties; due to the small size of the vineyards, harvesting must be done at the optimum time, usually in two afternoons.
