The famous green Chartreuse was born in France at the beginning of the 17th century, when the Duc d'Éstrees elaborated an "elixir of life" of aromatic herbs, giving the recipe to the Carthusian monks of the monastery located in the region of Grand Chartreuse, in the French Alps. The renowned liqueur consists of a composition of 130 plants macerated in wine alcohol and a secret aging time in oak barrels. This recipe and aging time are known only to 2 monks who keep the secret to this day, making its composition even more special.
The origins of Chartreuse are obscure. In 1605, Marshal d'Estrées gave the monks of the Carthusian monastery of Vauvert in Paris a manuscript containing the formula for a vegetable elixir. In 1764, this formula of 130 plants was refined and fixed by Brother Jérôme Maubec, who made it the herbal elixir of the Grande-Chartreuse, the monastery where the Chartreuse was produced until 1864. After a difficult end of the century marked by a French Revolution badly disposed towards religious people, the green and yellow Chartreuses were created in 1840 and enjoyed a rapid success. In 1903, the Chartreux were expelled from France and took refuge in Spain, in Tarragona, to produce Chartreuse despite the resale of the brand to a group of liqueurs. They recovered it in 1929 and returned to production in France, although the Tarragona distillery continued its activities until 1989. Today, Chartreuse Diffusion ensures the production, now at the Aigueneoire distillery -after Fourvoirie and Voiron-, and the distribution of the different Chartreuse: the green, the yellow, the vegetable elixir and the VEP, to mention only the best known. Old versions and limited editions delight lovers and collectors of the so-called "Queen of liqueurs".
