BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
"Young man with mandolin". ROYAL DUX, Bohemia, ca.1910.
Glazed porcelain.
With seal on the base.
It has very slight chipping.
Measurements: 80 x 30 x 24 cm.
Porcelain figure representing a young girl in country attire. The girl appears in an attitude of relaxation and reverie: she raises her arms with her elbows bent to hold her hat, gesture that transmits a pleasant stretching, almost choreographic. A mandolin hangs from her back. The knotted scarf on the chest, the curls of hair and the lace that adorns the brim of the hat are treated with great attention to detail, a sign of the technical virtuosity characteristic of the Royal Dux manufacture.
Royal Dux was one of the most outstanding porcelain manufactures of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods in Bohemia. Founded by E. Eichler in 1853 in Dux (now Duchov), near Prague, it has remained in business to this day. Around the turn of the century, the firm specialized in the production of Art Nouveau figures and busts. These were large pieces, mainly female-themed, as well as vases decorated with round figures.
