DESCRIPTION
Set of three glasses; La Granja, late eighteenth century.
Coat of arms of Charles V and Viva al rey.
Polychrome opaline.
Measurements. 10,5 x 8,5 x 7,5 cm.
These three polychrome opaline vases are a refined example of the European decorative production of the late eighteenth century. Made in a translucent white vitreous, they are notable for their vibrant hand-painted decorations, which combine heraldic, floral and zoomorphic motifs. Two of them display crowned coats of arms, framed by an exuberant vegetal ornamentation and stylized flora, probably linked to noble families or institutions of the time. The central vase, on the other hand, presents the dynamic figure of a red bull, represented with ease and expressiveness on a schematic landscape, evoking rural or symbolic scenes.
This type of glass was manufactured both in Valencia and La Granja. In the context of the development of Valencian glass, the arrival of artisan decorators of Dutch origin in the mid-eighteenth century stands out. These masters specialized in the production of small-format glasses and bottles, richly decorated with polychrome enamels. Decorations usually included human figures, birds, floral motifs and coats of arms, following an ornate and vibrant taste. The production reflected a clear Dutch influence and, in many cases, incorporated references to the reigns of Charles III and Charles IV, which allows for a more precise chronological placement.
