BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

ÉMILE GALLÉ (Nancy, France, 1846 - 1904).
Vase.
Cameo glass.
Signed.
Measurements: 58,5 x 12 cm.
Executed in cameo glass, this procedure, which consists of superimposing layers of glass of different shades and carving them to generate reliefs, allows a play of light and transparency that gives depth and dynamism to the surface. In this piece, the contrast between the ivory background and the overlays in blue and violet tones produces a subtle chromatic vibration, evoking the light transition of dawn or dusk.
The ornamentation unfolds in a delicate vegetal framework: leaves, flowers and tendrils intertwine in an organic ascent that runs along the elongated body of the vase, from the base to the neck, following the logic of natural growth that Gallé adopted as an aesthetic and philosophical principle. The artist does not limit himself to mere botanical representation; his intention is to translate into glass the very vitality of nature. Each leaf seems to breathe, each curve responds to an inner rhythm that gives the piece a kind of material animism. The composition, impeccably balanced, demonstrates a complete mastery of the technique of acid-etched glass and lighting effects obtained by color gradation.
As for its author, Émile Gallé was a central figure in the revival of the decorative arts in France during the Belle Époque. Trained in an intellectual and scientific environment, his father was a ceramist and earthenware merchant, Gallé combined the rigor of the chemist with the imagination of the poet. His work in Nancy became the epicenter of the École de Nancy, a group of artists and craftsmen who advocated a union between art, nature and technique. Gallé drew inspiration from botany, literature and philosophy.
