DESCRIPTION
Decanter decanter, mid-nineteenth century.
Cut glass to the wheel.
Silver lid, with hallmarks.
The hinge needs restoration.
Measurements: 28 x 15 x 13 cm.
This decanter pitcher is a characteristic example of high quality European glassware in the Victorian period and, more broadly, within the historicist taste of the 19th century. The piece is made of wheel cut glass, a technique that allows for deep, clean, faceted cuts, highly prized in Central European productions, especially those of Bohemia and England.
The body presents a complex combination of geometric and star-shaped carvings, arranged in diagonal bands and reticulated areas, which enrich the refraction of light and give dynamism to the silhouette. The lid - made in silver with hallmarks - incorporates naturalistic reliefs of bunches of grapes and vines, symbolic motifs that allude directly to its function as a piece intended for wine. The upper rim, sinuous and decorated in relief, accentuates the elegance of the whole and underlines the Victorian ornamental influence, very present in the goldsmithery and glassware of the period.
The handle, carved and applied, maintains the continuity of the decorative work and reinforces the handcrafted quality of the piece.
