DESCRIPTION
JEAN RENÉ GAUGUIN (Paris, 1881-Copenhagen,1961).
Double-spouted jug.
Glazed ceramic.
Signed.
In good general condition according to the antiquity.
Measurements: 20 x 37,5 x 11 cm.
This unique double spout jug presents a symmetrical composition articulated around two heads arranged in opposite directions, almost totemic in character. The piece combines functionality and sculpture, with an approach that refers to both archaic forms and a modern sensibility.
The surface treatment, with glazes of earthy tones and irregular shades, provides a spontaneous and material aspect, while the upper handle, with its contrasting chromatic accent, introduces a dynamic element into the composition.
Jean René Gauguin, son of the painter Paul Gauguin, developed a solid career as a sculptor and ceramist, settling in Denmark where he collaborated with manufacturers such as Bing & Grøndahl. His work is characterized by the synthesis between symbolist tradition and a modern language of simplified forms and great plastic force. He actively participated in the renewal of European decorative arts in the first third of the twentieth century, and his pieces are preserved in collections such as the Designmuseum Danmark.
