The Lladró artistic ceramics and porcelain company was founded in 1953 by brothers Juan, José, and Vicente Lladró, who created their first pieces on an experimental basis in a traditional kiln built in their family home in Almàssera, Valencia. In this way, they gave free rein to their artistic curiosity while working at a tile and tableware factory. In 1958, the three brothers decided to devote themselves exclusively to their own production and moved their small business to the neighboring town of Tabernes Blanques. By then, demand for Lladró’s creations had already reached unexpected levels. The brothers introduced innovations not only in the design and style of the figurines but also in firing techniques, successfully reducing the firing process from three stages to one. Single-firing is a pioneering method that produces the crystalline finish and pastel hues characteristic of Lladró pieces. A growing number of sculptors, chemists, and decorators expanded the founders’ work, and by the late 1950s, the company opened its first store in Valencia. In the following decade, the company’s focus on exports began to gain momentum, and the firm entered the Canadian and U.S. markets.
