BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

VERRERIES SCHNEIDER (Épinay-sur-Seine, France, 1913–1933).
Art Deco vase, ca. 1920.
Blown and colored glass, with appliqués and inclusions of polychrome glass powders.
Signed on the base.
Exhibits sligthly wear consistent with age and use.
Measurements: 51 cm high x 15 cm at its widest diameter.

With a stylized form, the vase features an elongated body in intense cobalt blue at the bottom, which is marked by the lively floral decoration rendered in yellow, brown, and light blue. The flowers, reduced to large, free-form patches of color, depart from the botanical realism typical of Art Nouveau to adopt a more abstract and energetic style. The blue-and-white speckled pattern surrounding the rim creates a luminous and atmospheric transition, while the yellow and brown tones provide striking hallmarks against the dark background.

Initially trained at the Daum factory, Charles Schneider founded a glassworks in Épinay-sur-Seine together with his brother Ernest. Beginning in 1918, they developed two commercial lines: Schneider, intended for the most exclusive pieces, and Charder-Le Verre Français, which was more widely distributed. The factory reached the height of its glory around the time of the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris, becoming one of the leading names in French Art Deco glassware.
