DESCRIPTION

SECOND PLANS (Cuba, 1965).
"Enchantment of the future", 2003.
Pastel on Canson paper.
It has slight flaws in the frame.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 49 x 64 cm; 53 x 68 cm (frame).
In this work several of the stylistic influences that cross the work of Segundo Planes are condensed with clarity. The central figure, childlike and artificial in appearance, refers both to the imaginary of surrealism and to a deliberately naïf and kitsch aesthetic, where vibrant color and formal simplification function as symbolic vehicles. The presence of lines that evoke constellations, diagrams or energetic trajectories connects the painting with an almost scientific-poetic thought, frequent in his production, in which the cosmic and the intimate coexist. At the same time, the use of grainy textures and the frontality of the figure recall certain traditions of modern Latin American painting.
Trained at some of the most relevant institutions in Cuba, such as the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), the Escuela Nacional de Arte (ENA) and the Escuela Provincial de Arte de Pinar del Río, he consolidated an early academic base that has sustained a coherent and constantly evolving trajectory.
His work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions in America and Europe, with outstanding shows in Mexico such as Sueño tallado en espuma and Lemas e himnos mutilados, as well as participation in international itinerant projects linked to prestigious museums and cultural centers. Recognized since the late 1980s with important national awards in Cuba, his work is now part of institutional and private collections in countries such as Cuba, Mexico, Spain, Ecuador and the United States.
