Casals i Camps fun Catalan painter active between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Trained at the Escola de Llotja, one of the most important artistic centers of Barcelona, he studied especially under the direction of the painter Enric Ferrant. During his training he developed an inclination for historical painting and for anecdotal or genre scenes. Throughout his career, Casals i Camps remained faithful to the principles of historicism. In 1866 he obtained an honorary mention at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid with a work dedicated to the Bombardment of Callao, which was one of the first public recognitions of his work. He subsequently participated in several exhibitions: in Barcelona in 1870 and in Munich in 1883, where he presented one of his most celebrated paintings, A Spanish Pharmacy in the early nineteenth century. In addition to history and genre painting, he also cultivated landscape painting and made copies of works by the great masters of Spanish painting, a common practice in the training and activity of many academic artists of the 19th century. In 1882 he was invited to participate as an artist in the first exhibition organized by the Acadèmia de Belles Arts de Sabadell. In addition to his activity as a painter, in 1887 he opened a private academy of drawing and painting.
