DESCRIPTION

KAREL APPEL (Netherlands, 1921 - Switzerland, 2006).
Untitled, 1960.
Mixed media on paper.
Signed in the lower margin.
Measurements: 35 x 29,5 cm; 52,5 x 58 cm (frame).

This work is representative of the spontaneous and energetic language of Karel Appel, a leading figure of the CoBrA group. Through a free, almost impulsive stroke, the artist constructs a scene of schematic figures where drawing and color are superimposed in a dynamic web of lines.

The composition is characterized by its apparent immediacy, with rapid and superimposed gestures that generate a vibrant and expressive image. The use of contrasting colors, together with the dominant black line, reinforces the primitive and direct character of the work, in tune with CoBrA's aesthetic, which claimed spontaneity, creative freedom and inspiration in children's art.

Made at a key moment in his career, this piece fully reflects the principles that define Appel's work, consolidated as one of the most relevant figures of post-war European expressionism.

Karel Appel was one of the founders of the CoBrA group in 1948, together with Asger Jorn and Constant. His work is characterized by a gestural, spontaneous language of great chromatic intensity, influenced by children's art and primitive forms.

Since the fifties he developed an outstanding international career, exhibiting in Europe and the United States. His work evolved from expressive figuration to an increasingly free and material painting.

He is represented in important international collections, such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, establishing himself as a key figure in post-war European art.
