MIQUEL BARCELÓ (Felanitx, Mallorca, 1957)
Untitled, 1979.
Watercolor on paper.

Measurements: 51 × 64,6 cm; 65,5 × 79 cm (frame).
Early work of Miquel Barceló made at a key moment of his artistic development, when the artist begins to define his own language based on experimentation and gestures.
The composition, of great formal economy, is articulated by repetitive and superimposed strokes that generate organic structures of an almost meditative character. The use of watercolor brings lightness and transparency, allowing to appreciate the process and the construction of the image through gesture.
Pieces from this early period are especially valued by collectors, as they anticipate the plastic concerns that will mark the later career of one of the most international Spanish artists of his generation.
Miquel Barceló was trained in Palma de Mallorca and continued his studies in Barcelona, making his debut at the tender age of seventeen. After discovering art brut in Paris, in 1976 he held his first solo exhibition in a museum, at the Museum of Mallorca.
In 1986 he received the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas and later the Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Artes, among other international awards. His work is represented in important museums such as the MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Guggenheim in Bilbao and the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, among other institutions of reference.
